Senior Legal Counsel
We currently have a full time opportunity for a Senior Legal Counsel to join QIC’s Risk, Legal & Tax team in Brisbane. In this role you will be responsible for providing expertise across M&A transactions, funds management and international transactions.
With your broad legal knowledge and understanding of financial services environments, preferably from prior in-house practice, you will work with the Head of Legal and Managing Legal Counsel as a trusted advisor to the business. You will deliver strategic advice managing legal risks within QIC’s risk appetite, providing & procuring legal services for QIC Investment Teams and Business Units.
Specifically your focus will be on:
Working as a strategic advisor to the business; actively providing legal guidance to support QIC’s vision;
Acting as a thought leader developing awareness and implement risk awareness initiatives with investment teams;
Providing and procuring external legal advice to all parts of the QIC business; including complex financing structures involving counterparties, entities and stakeholders both in Australia and overseas.
Creating, negotiating and overseeing legal documentation on behalf of QIC companies and trusts, including asset acquisitions and divestments;
Identifying relevant legislative changes and providing advice to the relevant teams on the opportunities or threats;
Develop and enhance policies, procedures and systems to ensure they conform with legal requirements;
Implementing a system for risk based legal review of marketing materials;
Presenting education sessions on legal matters to QIC colleagues;
Providing thought leadership on guidelines for best practices for contracting with external parties
Managing and mentoring as line manager of support staff;
The ideal candidate
As a strong candidate for this role, you will have experience across M&A, trusts and broad financial services exposure, as would previous experience in an in-house top tier environment with team management and mentoring skills.
You must also be able to demonstrate:
Broad legal knowledge across wide variety of areas of law relevant to QIC’s business;
At least six years of post-qualification experience in areas such as M&A, financial services, funds management, investment in international structures, trusts and corporate law and ability to grasp and apply new or unfamiliar concepts;
Exceptional commercial problem solving and evaluation skills to determine best commercial courses of action;
Proven ability to negotiate with internal and external stakeholders. This requires evidence of an ability to hold a deep understanding a client’s and (other stakeholders) position;
Sound understanding of national and international legal and regulatory environments
Experience in liaising with external stakeholders such as auditors and regulators and ability to influence outcomes with them;
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others and share knowledge across divisions;
